Thingiverse Thursday: Platform Jack
Functional, multi-part models are fun, but assembly can be difficult and time consuming. Our latest model: a functional Platform Jack, prints fully assembled without supports!
The platform jack is a fairly well known and simple design using linkages, sliders and a screw. As the screw is turned clockwise, the lower crossbeam is pulled toward the upper cross beam which causes the scissor-action in the linkages and separates the platforms.
The design was modeled in Solidworks and we went through three iterations of the design while varying the tolerances before arriving at the final design. If there was not enough tolerance between moving parts they ended up fusing together. Too much tolerance caused the the design to fall apart and the hinges to break.
The model prints upright in its closed configuration and extends 10.5 cm when fully opened. The jack can support a decent amount of weight although we haven’t tested the model until failure to get a value for maximum load.
